Fr. Spitzer Outlines Post-Gonzaga Plans
When Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., leaves the presidency of Gonzaga University in July, the growth of the Spitzer Center for Ethical Leadership will be one of his top priorities. Fr. Spitzer also plans to devote more time to the Magis Institute, which he founded, and to finishing three academic books and writing popular versions of six other academic books he has authored.

Fr. Spitzer announced his plans in a press release issued by Gonzaga. “I am going to really miss the students here, and the empathy I share with them and their parents,” Fr. Spitzer said. “But this opportunity to write books, develop leadership curriculum for the Spitzer Center, and develop a faith and reason component to the Magis Institute will provide a means to reach hundreds of thousands of people with the word of God.”
Fr. Spitzer added that he is hoping to make more use of broadband, high-definition videocasting technology to reach large, geographically diverse audiences with real-time presentations and Q&A sessions. The technology will help both the Spitzer Center and Magis to dramatically increase the reach and impact of their various programs and curricula.
In his 11 years as president of Gonzaga, Fr. Spitzer is credited with restoring the university’s financial health and building up the campus and student body. In his tenure, enrollment increased from 4,507 to 6,923, and the average SAT scores and GPAs of incoming freshmen improved as well. Annual gifts to the school nearly tripled from $5.8 million to $15.4 million annually, and Fr. Spitzer has overseen more than $200 million in campus construction projects.
The Four-Level Leader will provide more details on Father Spitzer’s future plans as they take shape in the months ahead.
